Gullfoss Falls, Iceland

Hveravellir nature reserve may be one of Iceland’s best-kept secrets with the naturally heated pool, the surrounding picturesque valley and on-site restaurant featuring local Icelandic fare, to enjoy at your leisure. Nestled between glaciers Langjokull and Hofsjokull, Hveravellir is known as the Oasis of the Highlands and is one of the last remaining untouched wilderness areas in Europe.

As a geothermal hotspot, the area is dotted with bubbling water holes and smoking fumaroles. With several hiking trails through the geothermal area leading to an 8,000-year-old lava field and a cave that was home to the infamous outlaw Fjalla-Eyvindur in the 1700’s, there is no shortage of interesting landmarks to explore on foot during this multi-day tour.

The Golden Circle to the Oasis of the highlands by Super Jeep

Your Winter Adventure to the highlands begins when you embark on the Gray Line Super Jeep in Reykjavik. Modified for Iceland’s off-road tracks and rugged terrain, a Super Jeep is the most thrilling way to journey across the land of fire and ice. Driving through the Golden Circle first, we stop at the historical Thingvellir National Park, the explosive Geysir geothermal area, and the majestic Gullfoss waterfall—some of Iceland’s most treasured landmarks. As we head for the highlands and drive on through the rugged terrain with our mighty Super Jeep, glaciers and ancient volcanoes will surround us in the otherworldly landscape of the highlands. Once arrived at the oasis in the highlands, a warm cabin and even warmer natural pool await you.

Hveravellir nature reserve—Iceland’s best-kept secret

The weather in the highlands can be unpredictable but no matter the elements, there are several options for activities at Hveravellir. You are free to explore the beauty of the area throughout the days: enjoy some downtime in the natural pool; go on a snowshoeing hike and check out the cave of the outlaws; hang out in the cabin cosied up with your favourite book and a cup of hot chocolate; or just take in the natural energy coursing through the earth in this magical place. Should the weather be clear enough for the Northern Lights to appear at night, you are welcome to enjoy the unique experience of admiring them from the natural pool or during a night hike. However, as they are a naturally occurring phenomenon, they are not guaranteed.

Return to Reykjavik rested and recharged

After the breakfast buffet on the last day, there will be a chance to take one final dip in the pool before making our way back to Reykjavik. Travelling once again in the Super Jeep through the vast mountains, glaciers and volcanoes, you will arrive back in Reykjavik by dinner-time rested and relaxed after a few glorious days in the Icelandic highlands, with memories that will last a lifetime.
