Inside the Volcano

Thrihnukar, Iceland

This unique volcano tour literally takes you inside a dormant volcano, through the top crater and to the bottom of its magma chamber where molten magma flowed during an eruption.

Reached via an hour-long hike and entered by way of an open cable lift, a descent of 120 metres, the ground space inside the volcano is equivalent in size to around three basketball courts, and the cavity could easily fit the Statue of Liberty.

Following eruption magma chambers usually collapse, but in Thrihnukagigur the lava drained out like water from a pipe leaving the volcano's plumbing system empty. The Thrihnukagigur crater is, therefore, one few places in the world where you can enter a magma chamber.
