Bondavardan Cairn (Bondavarðan)

Bondavardan Cairn (Bondavarðan)

This prominent cairn stands on a hill by the village of Djupivogur. Though dwarfed by modern antennae and relay masts, the cairn is believed to be quite old.

Its original purpose may have been as a lookout, to watch for arriving ships. Given that the settlement was raided and sacked by Algerian pirates in 1628, the inhabitants were wise to be wary.

Whatever the truth, the place is a spectacular panoramic viewpoint and for rather a little effort as it only takes five to ten minutes to walk up from the port.
