Budir (Búðir) lava and crater

Budir (Búðir) lava and crater

Duration: 1 hour each way. Difficulty: easy, level walk on a historic track with a short climb up the crater at the end. Interest: good views in clear weather; interesting and rare flora in the lava. Start/End: park by Hotel Budir and walk along the track towards the church. The trail starts across the lava to the crater in the distance, called Budaklettar.

Head straight across the lava in the direction of the crater. Take your time to enjoy the flowers along the way and look for some of the 11 species of fern found in crevices in the lava. You can climb the 88m high crater, which is thought to have erupted 5000-8000 years ago. Return by the same route.
