Coastal walk, Westfjords
North of Talknafjordur, the sand spit Sveinseyraroddi stretches into the fjord and during spring and early summer it’s an important area for breeding birds, among them eider ducks.
It’s closed off to visitors during this period but accessible at other times. There are beautiful white sand beaches all along the coast here.
Bakkafjara beach is located in a small bay towards the mouth of the fjord, just after passing Stori Laugardalur church.
It is enjoyable to walk further along the coast to Selatur, an abandoned farm that is now only used as a summer cottage.
The farmer´s wife planted trees and shrubs around her farm that were not expected to thrive but as you can see, she proved everybody wrong.
At the beach are remains of fishermen´s dwellings, from the time when farmers would fish in open rowing boats during the winter months. Walking along the fields of Stapi you’ll note the two impressive rock stacks at Stapavik.
