Djupalonssandur (Djúpalónssandur) Coastal Walk
Djupalonssandur (Djúpalónssandur) Coastal Walk
Duration: 30 minutes each way. Difficulty: an easy and mostly level walk on the beach and through lava. Interest: pebble beaches, interesting lava formations. Start/End: take road 572 signposted to Djúpalónssandur from road 574, 23 km south of Hellissandur. Park at the end of the road (toilets).
From the car park a trail leads down steps to the sea, a five-minute walk. At the edge of the beach see the boulders that fishermen had to lift to prove their strength. The smooth pebbles on this beach are said to be ‘lucky’ stones. The beach is littered with the remains of a shipwrecked British trawler. To your right, part way down the beach, a trail climbs onto the lava and takes you to the next bay, Dritvik. This was once one of the busiest seasonal fishing stations in Iceland! There are a few turf remains dotted in the vicinity, but little else remains. Return by the same route. From the car park you can continue walking in an easterly direction along the coast on a marked trail.
