Dvergasteinn - The Dwarves Rock

Dvergasteinn - The Dwarves Rock

Dvergasteinn, the dwarves' rock, is situated on the north shore of Seydisfjordur fjord, about 3km from the town.

The prominent rock is easily accessible and visible from the road.  A legend tells that the rock originated on the other side of the fjord but moved of its own accord when the local church was relocated across the fjord.

Interestingly, the rock is quite different from its surrounds.  The legend explains that the rock is a prayer site for the local dwarves and the idea of staying behind when the Christian church was moved to the other side of the fjord was simply unacceptable to them!
