Handprjonasamband Islands (Icelandic Hand Knitting Association)
Handprjonasamband Islands (Icelandic Hand Knitting Association)
The Handknitting Association of Iceland was founded in November 1977 by hundreds of Icelanders, mostly women, who supported their income by knitting pullovers, gloves, hats and socks from the special wool of Icelandic sheep.
By founding the association the knitters took the sale of their goods into their own hands.
You'll find their store at Skolavordustígur 19 in Reykjavik, and at Laugavegur 53b.
The main focus of the stores is selling goods made by members using Icelandic wool, mainly the chunky traditional Lopi wool, but there's also a selection of machine-made items also using Icelandic wool. The association‘s slogan has always been, "buy directly from the people who make it“.
Address: Skolavordustigur 19, 101 Reykjavik
