Hengill Volcano Area
Hengill Volcano Area
Hengill is still considered to be an active volcano although it last erupted 2,500 years ago.
There are many marked walking trails in the Hengill area with access from Hellisheidi power station and from Hveragerdi.
Signs mark the routes, their length, and level of difficulty.
At the highest point of the Hengill area, a viewing platform provides a spectacular panorama over Thingvellir and its lake.
The two islands in the lake were formed during the last Hengill eruption.
Hengill is a high-temperature geothermal area and you will note many hot springs, mud pools, and steam vents.
Here the area’s hot water and steam are harnessed by two major power plants at Nesjavellir and Hellisheidi, supplying the capital with hot water and feeding into the national grid.
