Hrafnseyri Farmstead

Hrafnseyri Farmstead

In Arnarfjordur, you’ll find Hrafnseyri farmstead and church and a replica of a turf farm building. Hrafnseyri was the birthplace of Jon Sigurdsson, the leader of the 19th Century Icelandic Independence movement.

Jon Sigurdsson lobbied for Iceland's independence at the Danish parliament in Copenhagen, where he spent most of his life.

However, he is an important figurehead for Icelanders and his birthday, June 17, was chosen as Iceland's National Day in recognition of his efforts toward Icelandic independence. You’ll find his picture graces the 500 Icelandic krona banknote.

There’s a nice cafe here but the museum is more of interest to Icelanders.
