Hveragerdi (Hveragerđi) - Hot Spring Valley
Hveragerdi (Hveragerđi) - Hot Spring Valley
Duration: 1.5 hours each way. Difficulty: moderate, with a steady climb of about 300m. Interest: colorful hot springs, a natural pool to bathe in.
For safety reasons, it is not recommended to leave the path in the vicinity of the hot springs. Start/End: turn left on the roundabout on road 1 as you reach Hveragerdi.
Drive through the village bearing left when you reach the river. Follow the river and after 1km bear left where the road forks. Continue to the end of the road and park.
There is a footbridge over the river and the path starts here climbing steadily above the valley of the Reykjadalsa. The path then contours around the side of a hill to reach the hot springs area - there is a shallow warm stream where you can bathe.
Many of these hot springs are new and very active having formed immediately after the earthquake of 29 May 2008. Return by the same route.
A map of the hiking trails of this area is available at the Tourist Information Centre in the village, in the shopping center opposite the hotel. Note that in parts the path can be very muddy.
Stay away from the hot springs as the crust can be thin and you risk getting burned.
