Latrabjarg (Látrabjarg) Bird Cliffs
Latrabjarg (Látrabjarg) Bird Cliffs
At 14 km. long and 441 m, at its highest point, Latrabjarg is the largest ocean cliff in Iceland and the island’s westernmost point. It is home to countless seabirds during the breeding season.
If you’re lucky, you’ll see the puffins as they parade along the grassy cliff top by the lighthouse.
You should stay well back from the cliff edge at all times, and be especially careful when there are gusty winds. On bright days, Snaefellsjokull’s snowy summit beckons from across the bay to the south.
A footpath follows the cliff, offering many opportunities to enjoy views of the nesting cliff birds, among them guillemots,
Brunnich’s guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes, and fulmars, as well of course as the puffins. Puffins nest in burrows in the grassy cliff tops – watch your step.
If you’ve got the energy, you can follow the path to the cliff’s highest point at 441m where a marvelous view awaits. This is a 5km strenuous hike each way.
