Ljotipollur (Ljótipollur) crater
Ljotipollur is a stunning example of an explosion crater, formed in an eruption in 1477 and considered the most southerly of the Veidivotn chain of craters. A steep track climbs to the crater rim but as it is often very rutted, we suggest you leave your vehicle at the foot and walk up.
There is a footpath around the crater rim, which makes for a very scenic hike – allow 1.5 hours. The hike is not recommended in gusty winds.
Note how the deep-red walls contrast with the cobalt-blue of the 14m deep lake and lime-green moss covering the rocks on its floor. It's a fantastic subject for photography but you’ll need a very wide-angle lens to fit it all in.
As you walk around the crater the background changes and will entice you to take even more pictures. Take your pick from Landmannalaugar’s rhyolite peaks, a jumble of braided river channels and distant glaciers - new inspiration from every angle.
