Oxarafoss (Öxarárfoss) Waterfall
Oxarafoss (Öxarárfoss) Waterfall
If you would like to get away from the busy trails at Thingvellir, you should follow the 'secret path'. The walk is about 1km and as the trail is uneven, walking boots are advised. See evidence of tectonic plate movement up close as well as the Oxararfoss waterfall, and with luck, not many other people!
Pull into a car park marked Oxara off road 36 close to the Hakið Visitor Centre. Walk along Langistigur (the Long Path) into Stekkjargja canyon. On the way, see a split cliff, Galgaklettur, which means gallows rock.
In the Middle Ages men who had committed a serious crime were hung from a pole that was put up in the gap. And finally, the path reaches the waterfall, where the canyon changes its name to Almannagja.
Though neither especially high nor holding a great volume of water, Oxararfoss is undeniably picturesque and will draw you under its spell.
