Papey Island

Papey Island

Just off the coast from Djupivogur, the low-lying grassy island is clearly visible from land. As you approach the island by boat the sky is filled with birds flying to and from their nest sites.

This wildlife paradise of seals, puffins, and other seabirds is listed by Birdlife International as a site of global importance.

Papey draws its name from the 'Paper', Irish hermits or monks who may have lived in the area before the arrival of the Norse settlers in the 9th century.

The hermits are said to have left shortly afterward as they did not wish to live among heathens.

Boat trips to the island allow time to land and walk around the island. The trips are run by Papeyjarferdir and depart from Djupivogur daily in summer, at 13.00.
