Sigurgeir’s Bird Museum at Mývatn

Sigurgeir’s Bird Museum at Mývatn

Probably Iceland’s best known stuffed bird collection can be found at Sigurgeir’s Bird Museum at Lake Mývatn. Even if you're not a fan of stuffed birds, the museum has other interesting exhibits, as well as binocular, bird books and bird hides. It also takes part in research and bird counts and you'll find a nice café with a panoramic view over the lake.

Sigurgeir Stefánsson, who lived at the farm Ytri-Neslönd, where the museum is located, collected the birds over many years. At first his collection was on display in a hut by the farm but as it grew a specially designed museum was built.

The museum opened in 2008, a year before Sigurgeir died. The museum is at the northwest corner of the lake and displays Sigurgeir´s collection. which includes all Icelandic breeding birds, except one.

The museum is open year round - please check on line for opening times.  www.fuglasafn.is
