Skrudur (Skrúður) Arboretum

Skrudur (Skrúður) Arboretum

Founded in 1909, Skrudur on the north shore of Dyrafjordur is Iceland’s oldest arboretum.

The vicar at nearby Nupur was interested in botany and collected seeds from all over the country creating the garden we see today.

Sheltered by birch trees and showcasing a variety of cultivated flowers, this lovely garden comes as quite a surprise.

The entrance to the garden is made of the jawbones of a fin whale, hunted 100 years ago by Norwegian whalers. In 2013 it received the International Carlo Scarpa Prize for gardens.
