Sogusetrid (Sögusetrið) Saga Centre and Tapestry
The village of Hvolsvollur boasts an interesting exhibition on the Icelandic Sagas at the Sogusetrið Saga Centre.
The Icelandic Sagas are works of Medieval literature written on vellum, many of which have survived into modern times.
The manuscripts were written in the 13th and 14th centuries but concern events that took place around the settlement of Iceland, some 400 years earlier.
As such they are not viewed as accurate historical records but are a unique and vivid portrayal of the lives of early Icelanders.
Widely acclaimed as one of the most readable and skillfully crafted, the Saga of Burnt Njal takes place in the surrounds of Hvolsvollur and many local place names are mentioned in the story.
The events of Njal's Saga are the subject of a magnificent 90m long tapestry, an ongoing project which could take ten years to complete.
On scheduled days it is possible for visitors to contribute to the tapestry and sew a little, under supervision.
