Stapavík (Stapavik) Cove
Stapavík (Stapavik) Cove
An easy walk to Stapavik Cove. Duration: 1.5 hours each way; distance: 4.5 km each way; start/end of the walk: the car park just east of the farm Unaós, on road 94, around 40 minutes drive north of Egilsstadir.
The path follows the banks of the River Selfljot to its estuary. Then continue above the shoreline to the cliffs by Stapavik Cove.
This inlet was chosen as a port for the surrounding area at the beginning of the 20th century. However, challenging sea conditions, a fatal accident and improved road access to better harbours contributed to its early demise.
All that remains of the failed enterprise is a winch but this peaceful place and its views out to sea are a perfect picnic spot.
