Systrastapi and the Nuns at Kirkjubaejarklaustur (Kirkjubæjarklaustur)
Systrastapi and the Nuns at Kirkjubaejarklaustur (Kirkjubæjarklaustur)
A convent was established at Kirkjubaejarklaustur in 1186, one of two in Iceland at the time, which operated until the Reformation in 1554.
Systrastapi is a rocky bluff located just west of Kirkjubaejarklustur. According to legend, there are graves of two nuns from the convent on the flat top of Systrastapi.
The nuns were burnt to death for breaking the rules. One was said to have sold herself to the devil, carried a piece of blessed bread in front of the toilet and slept with men. The other nun was suspected of speaking ill of the Pope. After the reformation in 1550, she has deemed innocent and beautiful plants grow on her grave, but nothing grows on the grave of the guilty one.
