Technical Museum of East Iceland

Technical Museum of East Iceland

The East Iceland Technical Museum is housed in two historic buildings in Seydisfjordur.

The old mechanical workshop traces the development of technological innovations during the period 1880-1960. It focuses on mechanics, electricity, communications, telephone, commerce, and architecture, interlaced with changes in lifestyle and milieu.

Down the road, the Old Telegraph Station also called "Wathne's House" was built in 1894 as a private home for Norwegian entrepreneur Otto Wathne. It became Iceland's first telegraph station with the laying of the first submarine telegraph cable between the island and the continent in 1906.

The first trans-island telephone line was carried by 14,000 telephone poles from Seydisfjordur to the capital Reykjavik in 1906.

In 1973 the Government donated the house to the town of Seydisfjordur to set up a museum.

The museum has exhibitions on the upper floor and in the cellar.
