Thuridarbud Turf Hut
Thuridarbud Turf Hut
Above the shore at Stokkseyri, look for Thuridarbud, a small turf hut built in 1949, in the place where Thuridur Einarsdottir is thought to have resided during the fishing season.
Thuriður (1777-1863) went fishing with her father from the age of 11, and by 17 she was a fully integrated crew member and later boat captain, extremely rare for a woman in those days.
She received an equal share of the catch and had to wear men’s clothes for the work, for which she had to get special permission from the authorities! Thuriður retired from fishing at 66 but lived to the grand old age of 86.
Turf huts such as this were erected by fishermen, who were often also farmers and had their main residence elsewhere. They were intended as temporary dwellings during the fishing season so were both small and rustic.
