Akureyri's Church on the Hill
Akureyri's Church on the Hill
Akureyri’s church commands an impressive view of the town and fjord. Designed by the same architect as Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavík, it was completed in 1940. Inside, its organ contains 3,200 pipes, and its beautiful stained glass windows either side of the nave depict scenes from the history of Christianity in Iceland.
Of special interest to visitors from the UK is the central window behind the altar. In WWII, windows from Coventry cathedral were removed and put into safe storage. There is some mystery as to how one of them ended up at an auction, where it was purchased for the church in Akureyri. The windows either side of it were subsequently made to match.
