Blonduos (Blönduós) Town
Blonduos (Blönduós) Town
Blonduos is a town situated at the mouth of the glacial river Blanda and is a service center for the surrounding Hunafloi Bay region. The river runs through the town and is Iceland’s longest salmon-fishing river, though now harnessed for the Blanda Hydroelectric Project.
There is a textile museum in town selling quality local woolen goods. In the historic warehouse Hillebrandtshus, you'll find an exhibition on polar sea ice, which occasionally arrives in spring with the cold East Greenland Current. The ice can take weeks to disperse, causing temperatures to plummet and hindering boat traffic.
Geese often congregate on the banks of the Blanda River and on Hrutey, a wooded island nature reserve in the river, accessed by a footbridge from the east bank.
