Budir (Búðir) place of beauty
This lovely beach, backed by dunes and overlooked by a striking wooden church is located on the south coast of the peninsula.
It’s a short detour from road 574 to the car park at the end of the road, just past Hotel Budir. From here, easy trails lead to the golden sand, made all the more impressive by the black basalt rocks framing the scene.
Inland, paths meander over the lava where growing in the sheltered cracks and fissures you will find many wildflowers and 11 of the 16 species of fern found in Iceland.
English artist William Collingwood (a contemporary of John Ruskin), spent several months touring Iceland in 1897 and painted many beautiful watercolors at Budir.
It’s not hard to see why he was struck by its landscapes.
