Majestic Dettifoss, on the river Jokulsa á Fjollum, is best accessed from the south on the new tarmac road 862 that runs along the west bank of the river.
North of Dettifoss the road is gravel but generally passable for all vehicles during the summer months.
Check the road condition before starting the drive. From the parking area and toilets, it takes 20 minutes on a good gravel path to reach the falls. Dettifoss is 100m wide with a drop of 44m and is considered the most powerful waterfall in Europe in terms of volume.
The average flow is around 190m3 per second but with summer melting of the icecaps, it increases significantly.
Dettifoss was a film location for Oblivion, featuring in the opening scenes.
Upstream from Dettifoss is a smaller waterfall Selfoss, also worth a visit. Around Dettifoss and Selfoss the rocks are slippery and the canyon rim is unstable – please stay away from the edge.
From Dettifoss a path follows the 20km long Jokulsa Canyon north to Asbyrgi, passing the waterfall Hafragilsfoss and many extraordinary volcanic features revealed by river erosion.
Note that there is no drinking water at Dettifoss.
