Dimmuborgir Lava Pillars
Dimmuborgir Lava Pillars
Duration: 1-1.5 hours. Difficulty: easy walk but the lava is rough in places. Interest: lava pillars, tunnels and caves; flowers and birds. Start/End: Dimmuborgir is accessed by a side road off road 1 on the west shore of Lake Myvatn, leading to a car park (toilets and café). Please stay on the trail at all times to avoid damaging the formations.
From the car park, walk down the trail and bear left following signs for ‘Stori-hringur’ or ‘Kirkjan’, the church. Pass a trail junction on your right, where you can detour to view some splendid lava pillars and another detour a little further on with a keyhole formation. Continue on the main trail until you reach the lava cave known as ‘Kirkjan’.
Now backtrack for a short way and take the path to the left marked ‘difficult’ – the wooden way mark posts are painted blue. It isn’t especially difficult but it leads you past several other lava caves and tunnels and is more interesting than the main path. Where this trail ends, follow signs to’ P’ to return to your car.
