Drangsnes Fishing Hamlet

Drangsnes Fishing Hamlet

Drangsnes on Steingrimsfjordur Bay is a fishing hamlet whose name derives from the sea stack Kerling, reputed to be a giant troll wife. This tiny hamlet has done its bit for tourism by building a couple of delightful hot tubs with changing facilities right on the shoreline.

It’s wonderfully relaxing to soak in the geothermal water, watching eider ducks cruise by - don’t miss it. The village also has a swimming pool.

Boat trips run in summer to the offshore island of Grimsey, a puffin sanctuary.  The trips land on the island, allowing passengers to view the puffins as they land by their cliff-top nest sites.  At the end of the cruise, stop by Malarkaffi for a coffee or a taste of freshly caught fish.

Further round the coast on road 645, driftwood from Siberia can often be spotted on the shores of Bjarnafjordur; farmers have gathered this throughout the centuries as driftwood is a great asset in a country that is so lacking in timber.
