Fjadrargljufur (Fjaðrargljúfur) walk
Fjadrargljufur (Fjaðrargljúfur) walk
Duration: 1 hour. Difficulty: a steady ascent and descent of around 100m on an easy grassy trail. Interest: great views of a spectacular gorge. Start/End: from the car park at the south end of the gorge.
From the car park, walk up the trail on the east side of the gorge for dramatic views into its shady depths. The gorge was formed when meltwater from a retreating glacier burst from its lagoon, eroding the soft palagonite bedrock. At the upper end of the gorge, you’ll find a small waterfall viewed from a side trail. Be very careful not to approach the cliff edge, especially when it is windy.
