Before you arrive in Flateyri look for the big chimney by the fjord, the remains of a whaling station. A trading post for over 200 years, today, this fishing town of around 200 people is a lively community set on the shore of a very scenic fjord. Many visitors come to try their skills at fjord fishing for cod.
Enjoy a good view from a viewing platform located above the village on the cone-shaped mound erected for avalanche protection. This was built following an avalanche in 1995 that claimed many lives.
On hot summer days, Flatley's residents head for nearby Holt, where one of Iceland’s most beautiful golden sand beaches projects into the sea, by the bridge over the fjord. Surprisingly the shallow sea warms up enough for a bathe in the ocean. The mud flats and area around the bridge are an important breeding ground for eiders and black-tailed godwits.
A small pond in Flateyri called Solbakkalon is where in summer small toy boats, built by one of the villagers, are sailing for the enjoyment of young and old. At the cultural center in the village is an interesting exhibition of 200 handmade dolls from all over the world.
