Fludir (Flúðir)
The area around Fludir is geothermally active, providing plenty of hot water for horticulture, greenhouse and mushroom cultivation, as well as for heating homes and businesses.
One of Iceland's loveliest bathing spots is at Fludir, the newly revamped 'Secret Lagoon'.
Originally, the community swimming pool, the water temperature is actually more like a bath than a swimming pool. It's the perfect place for a relaxing bath in atmospheric surroundings.
A pathway rings the bathing pool. Along the path, you'll see the numerous hot springs that feed the pool, as well as a small geyser - note that the path can be slippery and the hot springs are not fenced off so care is needed.
As more and more people discover the delights of bathing here, it may not be 'secret' for long!
Fludir also offers several choices for dinner, including an Ethiopian restaurant, as well as a supermarket.
And for those interested in Icelandic design, arts and crafts shops, check at the tourist information center for the best places to visit - many talented artists have their studios in the area.
The river Stora-Laxa runs right through the village and is renowned for salmon fishing.
It also makes for a pleasant morning or evening stroll.
The hill in the forested area above the village is also ideal for walking and the higher you go, the better the view.
