Iceland has been gradually moving towards greater tolerance of gays, not least due to the efforts of the gay and lesbian organisation Samtokin 78, founded in 1978. Today same-sex couples can be “registered partners” with almost all the same rights as married couples (though church marriage is not yet possible), and the annual Gay Pride march is one of Reykjavik's most colourful and popular summer events.
