Gjain (Gjáin) gorge
Gjain (Gjáin) gorge
Gjain is one of those special places that make you want to linger. The gorge is neither deep nor its waterfalls high but the luxuriant vegetation and curious rock formations, among them basalt columns, are enchanting.
Take a marked trail from Stong farm, roughly following the course of the river for about 20 minutes. It is an easy walk but care is needed once you climb down to the canyon floor. This beautifully landscaped canyon is often missed by tourists as it requires a little effort to get there.
The river Rauda, running through it is ideal for a spot of paddling. Gjain can also be reached by 4WD vehicles. Drive past Stong and continue up the track to the parking area about 1km further on. The track is not suitable for ordinary cars but you can walk along it instead.
