Gjogur (Gjögur) Village

Gjogur (Gjögur) Village

On the Strandir coast, a little north of Djupavik is the tiny village of Gjogur, a once thriving center for shark fishing during the 19th century.

You can see remains of the 15 or so buildings made of stone and turf once used by the fishermen.

No one lives permanently at Gjogur anymore, even though there is a small airport which connects with Reykjavik (weather permitting). Today homes are used as summer cottages.

It is nice to take a stroll around the well-kept properties and don´t miss a visit to the lighthouse at Gjogurnes, built in 1921.

Hot springs can be found north of the lighthouse and the surroundings are majestic.

Only accessible in summer.
