Hengifoss and Litlanesfoss Hike

Hengifoss and Litlanesfoss Hike

Duration: 2 hours. Difficulty: a gentle, steady climb of about 300m returning by the same route. Interest: two unusual and contrasting waterfalls. Start/End: park in the car park near the southern end of Lake Lögurinn on its west shore.

From the car park, the trail takes off up the side of the hill on the left bank of the river. It’s a steady climb so just take it slowly. About halfway up you’ll arrive at Litlanesfoss, a pretty waterfall made all the more impressive by its basalt columns.

This is a good spot to catch your breath before continuing the climb. Just before Hengifoss comes into view the path levels out descending to the river. Hengifoss is Iceland’s second or third highest waterfall (depending on which source you believe!) - it's unusual in that the cliffs around it are banded with iron-rich clay deposits.
