Hnausapollur Crater

Hnausapollur Crater

This crater is a splendid example of a maar (explosion crater) with a lake in its bottom.

Such craters are the result of short explosive eruptions and often form deep holes below the water table, allowing lakes to form after the eruption.

Hnausapollur is believed to have erupted shortly after the settlement of Iceland.

You can drive right up to the crater which is just off road F208, a few kilometres from its junction with F225.
