Hofsos (Hofsós) Village
Hofsos (Hofsós) Village
This picturesque fishing village on road 76, on the eastern shore of Skagafjordur, has a distinctly ‘period’ feel to it and is worth a visit. Being one of the oldest trading centers in Iceland its historic buildings by the harbor have been faithfully restored. One of the restored buildings houses the Icelandic Emigration Centre, which showcases the migration of Icelanders to North America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Many thousands of Icelanders made the journey by ship to Quebec, from where they were resettled in Canada and the USA. Their journey was prompted by widespread economic hardship in Iceland, caused by harsh winters and volcanic eruptions.
The village has a beautiful infinity swimming pool located on the cliffs of Hofsos.
