Hraunfossar and Barnafossar
Hraunfossar and Barnafossar
Possibly Iceland’s most unusual and enchanting waterfall, Hraunfossar ‘Lava Falls’ emerges from under a lava flow, cascading into the turquoise river Hvita.
It is all the more spectacular for the luminous green moss and lush vegetation that surround each rivulet as they fan out over the rocks.
From the car park (toilets and cafe on site) follow the trail a little further up the river to Barnafossar waterfall, where the river roars through a narrow chasm.
Legend says that two children from a nearby farm followed their mother’s footsteps across the river to church.
They crossed by the natural stone bridge over the river but when they looked into the swirling waters, they became dizzy, fell in and drowned. In her sorrow, the mother had the stone bridge demolished.
