Hraunfossar Lava Hike
Hraunfossar Lava Hike
Hraunfossar, the Lava Falls is one of Iceland’s most unusual waterfalls. Most visitors just view the falls and then leave but this hike takes you behind the scene through the beautiful lava flow from which the falls get their name.
Duration: 30 minutes each way. Difficulty: an easy level walk over lava. Interest: the variety of lava formations; mountain views. Start/End: Hraunfossar falls on road 518, 20km east of Reykholt.
From Hraunfossar, cross the river by the bridge, walk up the path to the viewpoint and the marked path through the lava starts from here.
This was an old pathway that linked the farms in the area. Eventually, the path emerges onto grassland where it peters out at the edge of the lava. Return by the same way.
The path is marked by cairns, in the traditional way. The cairns were sited at a distance from one another such that even in thick fog, the cairn ahead of you would be visible.
