Hrisey (Hrísey) Island Trip
Hrisey (Hrísey) Island Trip
Just 7.5km long and 2.5km at its widest point Hrisey, the large island in Eyjafjordur, has been continually inhabited since Iceland’s early settlement.
Visitors can walk around the small island on foot by following the numerous marked trails. The bird life is prolific with over 40 different species nesting here along with interesting plants such as garden angelica, which is often used in cooking and baking on the island.
Visitors are offered rides on a hay cart pulled by tractor around the village. The pace of island life is slow - there is a small village shop, an exhibition about a legendary shark hunter and a couple of cafes. Once a year the quiet is broken when the community festival, Hriseyjarhatid, takes place with events for people of all ages.
The Hrisey ferry leaves several times a day from Arskogssandur where the Kaldi microbrewery is found. The crossing takes just 15 minutes each way.
