Hvalfjordur Tunnel under the Sea Floor
Hvalfjordur Tunnel under the Sea Floor
Hvalfjardagong toll tunnel takes you under Hvalfjordur fjord, shortening the north to south drive by 48km. Before the tunnel was built, vehicles had to drive the long and winding road around the fjord.
Construction of this ambitious tunnel project began in 1996 and it opened two years later. The tunnel is 5770m long, drops 165m below sea level and on average about 5500 cars drive through it daily.
The toll booths are on the north side of the fjord and both card and cash payments are accepted.
There are several speed cameras in the tunnel!
