Hverfell crater
Hverfell crater
This tephra crater was formed about 2,800 years ago and at 140m deep and 1km in diameter, it is among the largest explosive craters of its kind.
There are two walking trails leading to the top of the crater, from where you can hike around its rim enjoying a spectacular panoramic view over the area.
The path on the south side of the crater is much steeper than that of the north side. Access to the crater is via a dirt road on the east side of the lake.
