Jokulsarlon (Jökulsárlón) glacial lagoon
You cannot fail to be wowed by the spectacle that meets the eye at Jokulsarlon - a tremendously popular and magical place for good reason. It is a huge glacial lagoon full of icebergs of all shapes and sizes, truly breathtaking.
Many visitors name it as their most memorable place in Iceland. After you’ve taken a trip in a Zodiac or amphibious ‘Duck’, spend some time walking along the shore to marvel at the 1000-year-old icebergs drifting silently on the lagoon or queuing up for the short journey to the ocean. If you’re lucky, you might witness them cracking, tumbling and breaking up in front of you.
Be sure to cross over the road from the lagoon and head down to the beach, where the waves wash some of them back onto the black sands, where they lay scattered like uncut gems.
Seals can often be seen swimming up and down the river. For those lucky enough to be in the area on the first or second Saturday in August, an annual firework display adds another dimension to a visit to the lagoon.
