Kerid Crater (Kerið)

Kerid Crater (Kerið)

Kerid is a volcanic crater lake located in Grimsnes and is a popular stop in the Golden Circle just North of the main road 1. Believed that originally Kerid was a cone volcano that erupted and emptied its magma reserve, today the lake shimmers with a stunning contrast of different colors.

The lake was formed as magma depleted causing the weight of the cone to collapse into an empty chamber, filled later with water.

Composed of volcanic rock and roughly 55 m deep, 170 m wide and 270 m across, the lake has little vegetation aside from the usual moss encountered all over Iceland.

The lake itself has good acoustics and on occasions, musical performances are held here.

Admission fee applies at Kerid volcanic crater.
