Kirkjugolfid (Kirkjugólfið)- Nature’s Tiles
Just outside Kirkjubaejarklaustur on the road that heads north from the roundabout by the service station, you find Kirkjugolfid (the Church Floor) - a protected natural monument.
The parking place is about 300m from the roundabout but you can also access the site on foot by a path which starts by the fuel station.
A marked path (5 minutes) leads to an expanse of hexagonal columnar basalt.
The columns are viewed end-on so that they look like a tiled floor, right in the middle of a grassy field.
