Kopasker (Kópasker) Village

Kopasker, on the shores of Oxarfjordur, is one of many tiny villages in Iceland that once thrived on fishing. However, when the fish moved their feeding grounds elsewhere, it had a devastating effect on the livelihood of the locals.

Today, there are just over 100 people living in the little village, which offers services for the region, including a small supermarket and fuel station.

There’s an exhibition on the earthquake that struck on 13th January 1976. Measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale, 90 of the 130 villagers were evacuated during a heavy snowstorm after the earthquake hit.
