Mjoifjordur (Mjóifjörður)
Mjoifjordur (Mjóifjörður)
It takes a bit of effort to reach remote Mjoifjordur, on a winding gravel road only open in summer.
Along the way, you'll pass the magnificent Klifbrekkufossar waterfalls tumbling alongside the road.
The tiny fjord community of 35 inhabitants is centered on the north shore hamlet of Brekka, where there is a cafe.
Because Mjoifjordur is so sheltered, it can get surprisingly warm in summer and the vegetation along the fjord is quite lush.
Beyond the village, a track continues to Dalatangi, from where there is a magnificent view out to sea. Iceland's first lighthouse was erected here in 1895 and a second one added in 1908.
Along the way, stop by the bridge over the river Hofsa and look into the Hofsargljufur gorge.
Across the fjord at Asknes, the remains of an old whaling station can be seen. It was built by Norwegians around 1900 and was the largest in the world at the time with over 200 hundred workers.
