Mount Sulur hike

Mount Sulur hike

Akureyri’s classic mountain hike, 1144m Sulur commands panoramic views over the town, fjord and surrounding peaks. July and August are the best months for this strenuous mountain hike, for which walkers must be adequately prepared and take food and drink. You can purchase a trail map of the area from the bookshop at the bottom of Kaupvangsstraeti, in Akureyri.

Duration: 6-7 hours round trip. Difficulty: steady ascent and descent of around 1000m on a classic ridge walk to the summit. Not recommended in windy conditions. Interest: glaciated mountains and spectacular fjord views Start/End: from the centre of Akureyri, drive up past the church and swimming pool on Kaupvangsstraeti, which then becomes Þingvallastræti. Turn left onto Suluvegur and continue on this dirt road, past the rubbish dump, ignoring side turnings until you reach a parking area

The trail starts going east from the parking area crossing a stile over a barbed wire fence. Then head south for the ridge, which ascends gradually to reach the 1144m peak. You can continue along the ridge to a second summit at 1213m.
