Mulakot (Múlakot) forest

Mulakot (Múlakot) forest

At Mulakot Iceland's Forest Service has been planting trees since around 1940 and it is now the largest and most versatile forest area in South Iceland. Before the middle of the 20th century, many kinds of trees were brought into Iceland from other northerly countries, as forestry in a treeless land was on the agenda.

The aim was to find the trees that could grow in Iceland. Many of these plants found their way here to Mulakot, so now it is a collection of both tall and rare trees.

You’ll also find here a rowan tree planted from seeds of the ancient rowan tree at Nauthúsagil gorge. Easy trails meander through the woodland area and give great views over this beautiful region of Iceland.
