Nauthusagil (Nauthúsagil) Gorge
Nauthusagil (Nauthúsagil) Gorge
Nauthusagil is a deep, lush gorge with a stream running through it and an enchanting waterfall at its head. It's simply breathtaking and all the more so because not many people know about it.
A 4WD high clearance vehicle is required as the track is rough and should only be attempted in summer. Follow road 249, Þorsmerkurvegur towards Þorsmork, looking out for the sign to Nauthusagil and stop when you reach the small car park.
Continuing on foot, you will need to wade the stream and waterproof footwear is essential. Follow the stream, cross the footbridge and follow the trail, occasionally using stepping-stones when needed to the stream.
Just entering the gorge is a magical experience but remember to look upwards as well as ahead of you. To get the full effect, and to reach the waterfall, you’ll need to go deeper into the gorge using the rope to help you clamber over the rocks to gain the inner reaches of this beautiful spot.
What is believed to be the oldest rowan tree in Iceland can be found near the head of the gorge, its branches sloping over the canyon rim. The Iceland Forestry Service has planted rowans grown from the seeds of this tree at Mulakot forest area in Fljotshlid.
